This report presents results of compressive strength testing of SureVoid® materials submitted to Commercial Testing Laboratories during March, 1996. The purpose of the testing was to determine the strength loss of the form void materials after being exposed to a moist environment for varying lengths of time.
The SureVoid® products tested herein include the 200 Double Wall with cell sizes of 4"x4", 4"x8", and 8"x8" and the 275C with a cell size of 6"x6", all measuring 6" in height. Testing was conducted by preparing five full width uniform samples of each of the SureVoid® products approximately 24" x 13" in size for the 4" and 8" cell configurations and 30" x 13" in size for the 6" cell configuration. Initial weights were recorded for each of the Samples, and four samples of each product were then placed into a 100 percent humidity room. The remaining sample of each product was tested to determine the compressive strength capacity in the dry condition. Samples were removed from the 100 percent humidity room at time intervals of 1, 3, 4 and 7 days. Upon removal from the moist environment, the samples were weighed and a moisture gain was determined for each sample. The samples were then tested to determine the compressive strength capacity in the moist condition. The reduction in compressive strength capacity versus moisture gain was then calculated for each sample.
Results of testing indicate that the samples tested experienced a moisture gain of between 11 and 23 percent after one day of moist exposure with a reduction in compressive strength of between 46 and 72 percent. After seven days of exposure to the moist environment, the moisture gain was between 24 and 135 percent with a reduction in compressive strength of between 68 and 95 percent. Complete test results are presented in Table 1. Compressive strength capacity versus moisture gain is presented in Figure 1 for all of the SureVoid® products tested. Individual test results are presented in Figures 2 thru 5.
The degree of moisture gain versus time was found to vary for the samples tested during this testing period. This can be attributed to the different exposures to the moisture source that was experienced by the samples when placed into the 100 percent humidity room. The SureVoid® products tested can be expected to experience a reduction in compressive strength capacity when exposed to the ground in a construction application. The actual reduction in compressive strength capacity will be dependent upon the application and exposure that the SureVoid® product experiences.
